Lisbon
In the Lisbon Life-Lab, nature-based solutions will be delivered in the deprived urban districts of Atores, Mercado de Arroios Armador and Olaias. They will form part of the regionally important Eastern Green Corridor; a key priority in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley biodiversity strategy. The implementation of the schemes will ensure a strong focus on social inclusion, demonstrating place-keeping principles, and enhancing ecological connectivity in the city’s urban districts.
Lisbon will trial low-cost and low-maintenance nature-based solutions that fit their local context such as local climate and soil conditions. For example, meadows benefiting pollinators with strong resilience to water scarcity will be delivered as opposed to lawns. It will also be important for the schemes to meet the requirements of local people in terms of their needs and wishes. Sensitive and inclusive social engagement, in often low-income and deprived communities, will therefore be important to their success. This will ensure the nature based solutions are valued and cared for.

Fast Forests for Lisbon: Nature, Community, Connections
The pilot Renatura started in late 2021. Its main goal is to bring back biodiversity to urban spaces, while enhancing social inclusion. Fostering a unique private/public sector partnership, the NGO Urbem and the Lisbon City Council convert abandoned public land into Miyawaki-based Fast Forests. Local communities are actively involved through a participatory approach.
